Fashion Reflections: Green Fashion Week Highlights

During my spring break of 2017, I got to meet up with my dear friend Hanne as she covered Green Fashion Week for her non-profit called Passport 2 Freedom. I am part of the board for this organization that uses creativity and fashion as a platform to raise awareness for human trafficking. We engage in all efforts towards ending modern-day slavery and oppression.

Green Fashion Week (GFW) is a non-profit international event supported by GD Major and FSA and patronized by the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea in collaboration with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

I was excited to get a break from counseling and facilitating groups in creative art therapy. Things can get a bit stiff when you get into a crystalized routine.

For me, I thrive in change and spontaneity and this was the fresh inspiration I needed.

I flew into Las Vegas to meet Hanne and we took a joyride into Death Valley. We traveled on a long windy desert path to the runway show. I thought we were going to get lost, especially when we went off a road to take some photos for fun. I’m blessed to say Hanne is a great navigator and got us to the Runway show. My outfit of the day was something long and floral, and my funky bronze sunglasses. Hanne’s look was a black dress and ray-bans.

This runway show was different in that they used an entire venue to have the models walk around and display the designer’s clothing. Below is footage from Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley. The music was live and had an acclaimed violinist to lead the models into their catwalk.

Here are some of the styles I LOVED. They had many designers who continue to venture into fashion with eco-friendly materials.

  • Orushka is “a superficial layer of femininity, sensuality and many other features, which never fully discover.” Described as ‘Futurism soft, humanoid, very sensual.’
  • AURIA “aims to keep their sustainability fashion values strong with fresh, fun and contemporary design, all the while maintaining integrity and putting environmental and social responsibility at the heart of their brand.”
  • Jeff Garner is “a romantic visual artist, pioneer, and unconventional designer. His sustainable, eco label Prophetik are on a path of transformation, leading the evolution of fashion and changing our perception of luxury. Mr. Garner was just named one of 40 top artists in the US and works were placed into the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery July 20th for the 40 under 40 Exhibition.”

I’m not going to lie when I say I was mesmerized by PROPHETIK’s style and visual artistry. I title him my first fashion designer/ artistic crush, lol!

During the week, we got to be part of their ongoing filming in various locations. Added bonus was being able to attend other events to meet the models and designers. Check out some of my personal favs below.

Here is their final work. This was Edition #5. Green Fashion Week continues and are currently on Edition #8, location: Switzerland.

I’m looking forward to going to more fashion weeks as I now have a new profound appreciate for this artistic outlet. The ability to make something out of materials of your choosing is freeing. This seems like such a cool event. I’ve always wanted to go to a fashion show and having it where they use all of the space seems intriguing. Love the attempt at being a statue too ;).

Thank you Kristen! I totally recommend it! I like that they didn’t use the traditional runway.
